Okotoks Film Fest celebrates 10-year milestone with 119 films
The festival runs June 4–13 with cinema from 23 countries, half of it Canadian, plus local filmmaker showcases.
Okotoks Film Festival is marking its 10th anniversary with an ambitious lineup spanning 10 days, June 4 to 13, and 119 films from around the world.
This year's festival brings cinema from 23 different countries. About 50 per cent of the programming is Canadian content, including six films made in Okotoks, several from Calgary, and others from across Alberta.
Festival director Katie Fournell recommends starting with the random short film package screenings for newcomers. "It's a great way to see a bunch of films with all different genres, countries and story types," she said. "You sit down for an hour and a half and watch five or six different films in one sitting. It's really hard to not enjoy something in that package."
One of the festival's most popular attractions is the screening of films from the 48-Hour Filmmaker Challenge, where local filmmakers create a short film under tight time constraints.
Beyond the screenings, the festival hosts a red-carpet gala opening night in the Okotoks Cinemas lobby with free food and mocktails. Attendees can hear from directors and filmmakers and attend workshops throughout the festival.
