A Foothills Composite student has earned All-American recognition at one of North America's premier track competitions.

Victoria Halbert, a Grade 10 student from Okotoks, finished eighth in the 800m run at the Nike Outdoor Nationals last week in Eugene, Oregon, posting a time of 2:08.41 in the championship division. The achievement came after she met the qualifying standard in May to earn a berth to the U.S. nationals.

"That was really cool to be able to stand on that podium and represent Foothills," Halbert said. "I'm so grateful, my support team, my family, all of my coaches are phenomenal and that's really what's been able to bring me there." She also competed in the mile race — a distance slightly longer than the 1,500m that Canadian track athletes typically race — and posted a personal best.

Halbert, a School Sport Alberta champion in the 1,500m and silver medallist in the 800m, emphasized the value of competing against top American runners. "I was really excited to be able to run with top competitors in America," she said. "It's a great experience to improve your times and learn more about racing and a bunch of other tactics we might not get in smaller races here." In her heat, she focused on getting out quickly and staying in the top group without getting boxed in. "I ran a 2:08, just a second off my personal best, which I was hoping, but it was still a really good experience and I learned a lot of racing tactics."

Halbert also competed alongside Foothills Grade 12 student Noah Heuver, who ran the steeplechase — a gruelling 3,000m event featuring water jumps and obstacle barriers — and finished 25th. Heuver is headed to the University of Alberta to study business and join the Golden Bears' varsity cross country and track teams. Next up for Halbert is the Canadian Nationals in August.
