Aysha Amiri was pinned against a concrete wall outside a pharmacy Monday when a driver accidentally accelerated, striking her and her three young children in their strollers. Her hip was severely fractured; her two-year-old son's hand was injured. A daughter born after her husband's death and a four-year-old son escaped serious injury.

The family's string of losses began in March 2025, when Amiri's husband, Faisal, was killed in a head-on collision on Range Rd. 284 east of Calgary. Faisal, 33, worked as a baker at the Canadian embassy in Kabul for eight years before the family fled Afghanistan in 2021, fearing reprisals because of their ties to Canada.

Faisal's two brothers were severely injured in that same crash and are still struggling with their injuries. Since his death, Amiri has been on an affordable housing waiting list and has relied on family support.

Police say the driver remained at the scene following Monday's incident and their investigation is continuing. There's no word on charges.

By Friday, Amiri had left hospital with a walker, showing signs of improvement. Her cousin, Javed Amiri, said the family remains hopeful. "Inshallah, she'll walk again," he said.
