Calgary man sentenced to 10 years for Boxing Day crash that killed 9-year-old

Duane Nepoose, 32, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a Boxing Day crash that killed nine-year-old Victoria Desjardins and injured her mother and sister.
Nepoose stole a minivan on Dec. 26, 2024, and was fleeing police when he sped through a red light and collided with the Desjardins family vehicle. Victoria died shortly after the crash. With credit for time already served, Nepoose will spend seven and a half years in prison.
Nepoose had pleaded guilty to multiple charges. Crown prosecutor Todd Buziak said outside court Thursday that the sentence reflects the gravity of the family's loss. "I've had a chance to speak with the family. They're pleased with the sentence," he said. "For them, it reflects justice with respect for what they had to go through."
