A man who pleaded guilty to attacking a Calgary Transit bus operator in northeast Calgary has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Curtis Baker Spence, 21, attacked 67-year-old bus driver Amarjit Grewal in May 2025 around 1 a.m. in the area of Falconridge and Castleridge Boulevards. The assault happened after Spence and his brother, 23-year-old Darryl Flett, demanded the driver take them to another location. Grewal was struck with a collapsible baton and an edged weapon.

On June 20, a judge sentenced Spence to four years, citing the "senseless nature of the attack" along with his criminal history. The judge also noted Spence's background growing up Indigenous, in foster care, and experiencing violence. Spence received credit for 13 months already served and was given a 10-year weapons prohibition. He is expected to be released in October 2028.

Grewal was seriously injured and off work for more than a year. He attended the sentencing hearing and expressed hope of returning to work one day. Transit union members rallied outside city hall during the hearing, pushing for better protections for workers. Spence's brother, Flett, pleaded guilty to assault on Friday and is expected to stand in court again in August.
