A judge sentenced Curtis Baker Spence, 21, to four years in prison Friday for the brutal attack on Calgary Transit driver Amarjit Grewal on May 4, 2025.

Justice Frederick Fisher cited the "extreme violence" and "senselessness" of the assault, which was captured on an in-bus security camera. Spence and his brother struck Grewal repeatedly with a collapsible baton and an edged weapon, leaving the 67-year-old driver with permanent injuries to his left hand, head wounds, and post-traumatic stress. Grewal has not been able to return to work.

The judge applied a section of the Criminal Code that deems assaults on transit operators an aggravating factor in sentencing. Crown prosecutor Greg Piper argued the provision applied because the robbery charge included assaultive behaviour.

Spence's brother, Darryl Flett, 23, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in January and will be sentenced in August. Both brothers face restitution of more than $32,000 for Grewal's lost wages.

With credit for 20 months already served on remand, Spence must spend an additional 28 months behind bars. The case drew support from Calgary's mayor and transit union leaders, who rallied Friday outside city hall calling for tougher sentences in transit attacks.
