A Calgary police officer is in stable condition after being shot during a traffic stop Monday morning in the southwest community of Spruce Cliff near Edworthy Park.
At approximately 11:45 a.m., officers were conducting a traffic stop when an occupant of the vehicle fired shots, striking one officer. The suspect then fled the vehicle on foot into Edworthy Park toward the Bow River, firing at pursuing officers and nearby civilians as he ran. He carjacked another vehicle and drove it through the park until it became stuck, then resumed fleeing on foot.
HAWCS helicopters located the suspect in the Bow River prior to officers reaching him on the ground. Calgary Fire Department assisted with recovery of the suspect's body. Officers continued searching Edworthy Park Monday afternoon for additional evidence.
Police describe the incident as dynamic with new information still emerging. Witnesses are asked to contact officers on scene or call Calgary Police. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the incident as is standard practice following an officer-involved shooting.
