Kepra Udup Bang, 27, of Calgary, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on September 24 for the aggravated sexual assault of a 28-year-old woman in Forest Lawn on July 14, 2019.
The attack occurred when multiple residents heard screams and called police. Officers found the victim in bushes and trees, naked from the waist down, with severe facial trauma so extensive an officer said they could not have identified her from a photo. She was struggling to breathe and choking on her own blood.
The victim spent eight months in hospital after the attack, including eight days unconscious in intensive care. She did not recognize her mother until August 8, 2019. Justice Allan Fradsham called it "a crime of egregious violence, which grossly violated the victim's sexual integrity and left her with significant life-altering injuries."
The Crown had sought 10 to 12 years; the defence argued for 7 to 9 years. Justice Fradsham determined the appropriate range for aggravated sexual assault with severe injuries was 10 to 15 years, placing Bang at the lower end with credit for 893 days in pre-trial custody.
This sentence follows similar cases: as HOC reported in July, a man facing charges in a similar 2019 attack faced a potential 7-10 year range, and in September a serial rapist received 12 years for multiple offences.
