Kepra Udup Bang, 27, was sentenced Thursday to 12 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault in Forest Lawn. Justice Allan Fradsham ruled the attack — a crime of "egregious violence, which grossly violated the victim's sexual integrity and left her with significant life-altering injuries" — fell within the 10 to 15 year range appropriate for such offences.
The victim, identified in court as MM under a publication ban, was attacked just before 5 a.m. on July 14, 2019. Multiple residents called 911 after witnessing the attack or hearing screams. Police found her choking on her own blood, naked from the waist down in thick bushes and trees, beaten so severely in the face that an officer could not have identified her from a photo ID.
MM was unconscious for eight days. When she woke, it took more than two weeks to recognize her own mother. She suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and required surgeries for multiple broken bones in her face. She spent months in a wheelchair and now lives with her mother. She will never be able to work and rarely leaves home due to sensitivity to noise and crowds.
Prosecutor Peter Mackenzie described the scene as "stark horror" and sought a sentence of 10 to 12 years. Udup Bang's defence lawyer, Gunntas Sidhu, argued for 7 to 9 years. Justice Fradsham's sentence split the difference, settling on 12 years.
Udup Bang was not charged until 2025, after submitting DNA for an unrelated breaking and entering conviction in 2024. His DNA matched swabs collected from MM's body and a wristband found near her at the crime scene. The charges have not been tested in court beyond this conviction.
