Crown withdraws fraud and theft charges against former Cricket Canada CEO Salman Khan

Crown prosecutors have withdrawn fraud and theft charges against Salman Khan, 47, the former CEO of Cricket Canada, saying there is insufficient evidence to proceed.
The charges were withdrawn Monday morning, the first day of Khan's trial. Prosecutor Petter Hurich made the decision after what the Crown Prosecution Service described as "almost a year's worth of work on this file, critically evaluating the evidence."
Khan was charged in March 2025 with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000 related to alleged misappropriation of $200,000 from the Calgary and District Cricket League between 2014 and 2016. Syed Wajahat Ali, the league's former treasurer and co-accused in the matter, had his charges withdrawn earlier this year.
"This was the right result in law for Khan," said Khan's defence lawyer Jim Lutz. "My client is extremely grateful the Crown took the time to thoroughly review this file."
Cricket Canada terminated Khan in December 2025, nine months after charges were announced. The organization cited Khan's failure to disclose the criminal charges and violations of organizational bylaws. Khan's contract included a clause entitling him to full-term pay if fired for any reason other than criminal conviction — he is reportedly fighting to recover the remaining $475,000 owed.
The investigation began after a 2017 audit raised concerns about league finances. Police alleged Khan and Ali misappropriated funds through cheque payments to construction businesses connected to the former president and treasurer for repairs and upgrades to league facilities, work that was either never completed or poorly done.
