A cyclist in his 60s was killed Saturday after a vehicle struck him on Centre Street in northeast Calgary, police say. The collision occurred around 1:35 p.m. between 19th and 21st avenues when a man in his 70s driving a 2019 Ford Escape appeared to suffer a medical event, causing the vehicle to drift onto the curb. The Ford struck the northbound cyclist, then continued onto a sidewalk where it hit a bus stop sign before dragging the cyclist back onto the roadway near 20th Avenue.
The vehicle then entered the 21st Avenue intersection, striking the back of a Toyota Highlander, which in turn hit a Chevrolet Silverado. The Ford continued forward, hitting a pedestrian in his 60s, and finally struck a pole. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford was taken to hospital in critical condition. The pedestrian who was struck suffered minor injuries; all other people involved reported minor or no injuries. Calgary police say there is no evidence that alcohol, drugs, or speed were factors in the crash.
Officers are investigating whether a medical event contributed to the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
