Four longtime Alberta New Democrats, including Joe Ceci, a former Calgary city councillor, will not seek re-election in 2027.

Ceci represented Calgary-Buffalo as MLA and served as finance minister under former Premier Rachel Notley. He also spent 15 years on Calgary city council as the Ward 9 representative. The other three departing members are Marlin Schmidt (Edmonton-Gold Bar), Lori Sigurdson (Edmonton-Riverview), and Dr. Luanne Metz (Calgary-Varsity).

Schmidt was minister of advanced education under Notley. Sigurdson held the ministry of seniors and housing. Metz, a University of Calgary professor and researcher before entering politics, chaired the NDP's Future of Health committee and helped shape the party's vision for strengthening the province's public health-care system.

All four are expected to remain in their roles until the end of their current term. NDP leader Naheed Nenshi thanked them for their contributions. "There is no doubt they will continue to contribute to their communities in meaningful ways in the years ahead," Nenshi said. "On behalf of our entire caucus, we thank them for their service and wish them every success in their next chapter."

The announcement came Saturday from the NDP's spring provincial council meeting. So far, 21 candidates have already been nominated for the next provincial election.
