A man is dead following an altercation with RCMP officers on Highway 9 near Irricana on Friday, July 3, around 6:20 p.m.
Airdrie RCMP responded to an open-line 911 call and located a male suspect on the highway. During the altercation, at least one officer discharged their service weapon, striking the suspect. Life-saving measures were initiated but the suspect was ultimately declared deceased on scene. No officers were injured.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the province's police watchdog, is conducting an independent investigation into the incident. The nature of the 911 call was not disclosed and no other details about the altercation were released.
Independent of ASIRT's investigation, the RCMP's internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place. "RCMP training, policy, police response, and the officer's duty status will be subject to review," RCMP said in a release. "The RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT." This marks at least the fourth fatal officer-involved shooting in Alberta over the past two weeks.
