Alberta's police watchdog has opened a Level 1 investigation into a fatal shooting in Brooks after an RCMP officer fired on a man holding a knife on July 15.
According to the RCMP, officers arrived at a home around 4:15 p.m. to arrest a man in connection with a break and enter reported earlier that day. After being invited inside, the man emerged from the back of the home, saw the officers, and exited through a side door. He then ran toward a nearby alley, pursued by one officer.
In the alley, the officer told the man to drop a knife he was holding. The man ran toward the officer, and the officer fired, striking him. First aid was provided at the scene, but the man died before paramedics arrived. Police say investigators recovered a pair of knives at the scene.
The Police Review Commission directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate as a Level 1 matter — the agency's designation for cases involving serious injury or death, or serious concerns about an officer's conduct. ASIRT will examine the use of force by police and the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
