High River's Jason Glass has qualified for the Rangeland Derby championship final at the Calgary Stampede, where he will compete for the title on July 13, against Jamie Laboucane and defending champion Chanse Vigen.
Glass finished third in the overall standings after nine nights of chuckwagon racing. His path to the final came despite a difficult start—he incurred five seconds in penalties on opening night, which dropped him from third to 26th place. He recovered by placing in the top three on seven of the next eight nights.
Glass is racing with a heavy heart this year at the Stampede. His father, Tom Glass, a four-time Rangeland Derby champion, passed away in late June.
Foothills driver Dayton Sutherland is having an outstanding Rangeland Derby, sitting in seventh place in the aggregate heading into the final night. Blackie driver Jordie Fike knocked over a barrel on Saturday to incur a five-second penalty, dropping him to 18th place in the overall standings.
