Two people died Saturday morning when a small plane crashed in the Mount McDougall area of Kananaskis Country, RCMP confirmed.
The Cirrus SR22 departed Springbank airport just after 8:50 a.m. MT on September 6, headed for Campbell River, B.C. At 9:15 a.m., the aircraft went down in Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park. Witnesses at Kananaskis Country Golf Course reported the plane appeared to lose power before striking the mountain.
Alberta conservation officers, park rangers, Kananaskis Mountain Rescue team members, and STARS air ambulance responded to the scene. The bodies and aircraft have not yet been recovered due to weather conditions and the remote, mountainous terrain.
The Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation. The identities of the two deceased, their ages, and other details about the flight have not been released.
