Man identified in fatal East Village stabbing; suspect charged with second-degree murder

Lionel Fontem Essembieng, a 31-year-old Calgary resident, has been identified as the victim of a fatal stabbing in East Village on Friday, October 2. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. in the area of 7 Avenue S.E. and 5 Street S.E.

According to police, two men who knew each other became involved in a physical altercation. One man produced a knife and stabbed the other. Essembieng was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries but died from his wounds. An autopsy was completed, followed by identification.

Newton Kioi Ng'ang'a, 28, a Calgary resident, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder. Ng'ang'a is scheduled to appear in court on October 14.

This is Calgary's 15th homicide of 2026. Staff Sergeant Mark Rahn of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit said the incident was "a brazen act of violence that claimed a person's life" and noted that police are "working to determine exactly what happened and are asking anyone with information to come forward."
