Macy Young and John Douch both punched their tickets to Championship Sunday at the Calgary Stampede rodeo by posting the fastest times Wednesday in their respective events.
Young, of Whitmann, Arizona, recorded 2.5 seconds in breakaway roping—Wednesday's fastest time. She boosted her Pool B earnings to $10,000, sitting in second place overall behind Oklahoma's Cheanne McCartney ($19,500) and ahead of Texan Jordi Edens-Mitchell ($9,000).
"My game plan was really to back off the barrier and just run in there and catch him," Young said of her approach. She came into Wednesday needing a fast time after earning just $3,000 through the first two days.
Douch, of Huntsville, Texas, took first in tie-down roping by beating the time his buddy Hunter Herrin told him he'd need. "I had to be 7.5 to move to the next round," Douch said. He finished at 7.4, boosting his Pool B earnings to $14,500. "I love this rodeo," he added. "I'm pretty excited to finish out to see where it goes."
Championship Sunday runs July 12.
