A man is facing charges after an alleged random attack at a south Calgary CTrain station last Thursday.

Calgary police say officers responded to the Somerset-Bridlewood platform around 7:30 a.m. on August 15 when a man came to them with facial injuries. He told police that another man had confronted a woman on the platform, shouted racial slurs at her, and hit her in the face. When the victim stepped in to help, he was also attacked.

The suspect ran from the platform and was chased by officers on foot. Other units moved in to block off the area, and the suspect was found nearby shortly after. The man who intervened suffered minor injuries. Police have not yet been able to speak with the woman who was assaulted.

Steepan Surane, 38, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of assault and one count of obstruction. He also had 11 outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest. Police are treating the attack as random and investigating whether hate was a motivation.
