A two-year-old boy was struck by a taxi in a parking lot near Winners, in the 2500 block of 36th Street N.E., around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, and died of his injuries at the Peter Lougheed Centre.

Calgary police traffic reconstruction officers were at the scene through the evening, and the investigation is expected to take several hours. The collision stayed contained within the parking lot. How it happened is not yet known.

The driver, an adult man who was working as a taxi driver, stayed at the scene and gave assistance and is co-operating with the investigation. It is not yet known whether he was on duty at the time. No charges had been laid as of Sunday night.

"A two-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle at that address. The driver stayed at the scene and rendered all assistance that they could," Staff Sgt. John Guigon of Calgary police said in an interview late Sunday. "Many people came forward and recounted what they saw."

The child's parents and many witnesses were present when the crash happened. Police have not released the identity of the child or the parents, and the taxi company has not been named.
