A body was found in a basement fire Thursday afternoon on 27 Avenue N.E. Police say the death is suspicious and an autopsy is underway.

Calgary police are investigating a suspicious death after firefighters discovered a body in a basement fire Thursday afternoon in the northeast community of Tuxedo Park.

Calgary Fire Department crews responding to the 200 block of 27 Avenue N.E. around 12:40 p.m. on August 27 found heavy smoke in the basement. After clearing the smoke, they located one person who was pronounced dead at the scene. The fire was contained to the home where it started.

Members of the CPS Homicide Unit and the Medical Examiner's Office attended the scene and determined the death was suspicious. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, August 28.
