One dead in basement fire at northeast Calgary home Thursday afternoon
Firefighters found one person in the basement of a home in Tuxedo Park after responding to a structure fire around 12:20 p.m.

One person was found dead by Calgary firefighters at the scene of a basement fire in Tuxedo Park on Thursday afternoon.
Crews were called to the 200 block of 27th Avenue N.E. around 12:20 p.m. for reports of a structure fire. Firefighters located the fire in the basement and began extinguishing it before undertaking a search. Heavy smoke required fans to clear the area before crews could enter safely.
"During that search they did locate one victim in the basement," said Calgary Fire Department spokesman Alex Kwan. "When they went to do a rescue, once smoke conditions cleared enough for them to see … it was confirmed as a fatality at this fire."
The fire was contained to the home where it started, with no damage reported to neighbouring properties. The identity of the person found dead has not been released. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. The Calgary Police Service, Emergency Health Services, and the province's chief medical examiner are involved in the investigation.
