Steve Alker wins Rogers Charity Classic in playoff over Y.E. Yang at Canyon Meadows

Steve Alker defeated South Korea's Y.E. Yang in a one-hole playoff Sunday to capture his second PGA Tour Champions title of the season at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club.

The 55-year-old Alker rolled in a seven-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole to secure the win after Yang carded bogey, unable to recover from hitting his ball into a hazard on the par-5 finishing hole. Alker finished regulation tied with Yang at 16 under par after shooting 65 to Yang's 63.

"You never like to see someone make bogey," Alker said of Yang's two-shot penalty from the water. "There's no pressure, though. I had two putts to win, so I think the putt becomes a little bit easier after that."

Alker had a chance to win in regulation but missed a lengthy birdie putt, his second shot coming up left of target. "I had a flush 5 iron, but I just pulled it left of my target and then the chip wasn't very good, so it was kind of a sloppy finish with 5 irons into the green, but I got it done," he said.

The New Zealand golfer recorded five birdies in a six-hole span from holes 11 to 16, bouncing back from two bogeys on the front nine. Yang, who shot 63 in the final round, led after 54 holes before Alker's late surge forced the playoff.

Americans Jerry Kelly and Zach Johnson tied for third at 15 under par, two shots ahead of defending champion Richard Green and three others.

Canadian Mike Weir of Bright's Grove, Ontario, finished as the top Canadian at 11 under, tying for 14th place. Weir carded 66 to match his second consecutive round of that score and moved into contention with five birdies and one bogey Sunday. "It was a good finish to birdie 17 and 18 to finish off the week," Weir said. "I played well enough to be really in contention this week, just the flat stick was a little cold." He called it his best showing of the year so far.
