Sports streaming costs in Canada keep climbing as Sportsnet+, TSN raise subscription prices

If you've noticed your sports streaming bill creeping up, you're not imagining it. Major Canadian sports streaming platforms have been jacking up their prices, and the pain is especially acute for hockey fans with limited options.

Sportsnet+, the main hub for most Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames games, announced a price hike that takes effect September 22. The standard subscription will jump from $29.99 to $34.99 monthly, or from $249.99 to $269.99 annually. The premium subscription—which includes all Stanley Cup playoff games and over 1,100 hockey contests—will climb to $44.99 monthly or $344.99 annually.

TSN+ already raised its rates in April. The platform now costs $29.99 per month or $249.99 annually, up from $24.99 monthly or $199.99 annually. TSN offers regional games for the Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators and Winnipeg Jets, all CFL games, Formula 1 racing, and select FIFA World Cup coverage. For those who only want NFL RedZone and PGA Tour access, TSN offers a $8 monthly or $80 annual tier.

Other major platforms have similarly steep pricing. DAZN, required for every NFL game in Canada, costs $24.99 monthly or $299.88 annually; its Ultimate subscription with Premier League access runs $44.99 monthly or $539.88 annually. FUBO, which holds Premier League rights in Canada, costs $31.49 monthly or $231 annually. Amazon Prime Video charges $9.99 monthly or $119.88 annually but offers limited sports content. MLS on Apple TV+ now requires only a standard Apple TV+ subscription after the league discontinued its standalone pass.

For Calgary Flames fans without cable, the math gets grim fast. A standard Sportsnet+ subscription at $34.99 monthly plus TSN+ at $29.99 monthly hits $64.98 before tax—roughly what cable packages used to cost for far more channels. The industry that promised a cheaper, more flexible alternative to cable is increasingly pricing itself toward that old model.
