Calgary's Stefan Daniel earned a silver medal at a World Triathlon Para Series race in Hamburg, Germany, on Sunday.
The 29-year-old six-time world champion finished second in the PTS5 classification with a time of 57 minutes 52 seconds, 13 seconds behind gold medallist Martin Schulz. Bronze went to Portugal's Filipe Marques. The race featured a 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and five-kilometre run.
Daniel said he came into the race with modest expectations. "I was pleasantly surprised," he told reporters. "This whole year has been about taking a step back. I've been working, coaching and enjoying things out of triathlon. I just wanted to have fun doing a triathlon, and I have always wanted to race Hamburg. The podium was a stretch goal today. I wasn't expecting it at all."
A Paralympic silver and bronze medallist, Daniel has struggled to stay healthy over recent years. His plan is to stay fresh and be prepared for a two-year push toward the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. "Being healthy is so, so important and I know the fitness will come from that," he said. "I was just able to race a bit freer mentally. I had more fun with it and that goes a long way."
