Southern Alberta braced for severe weather Tuesday afternoon as Environment Canada issued a red tornado warning for areas west of Brooks.

At 3:28 p.m., the alert warned a serious thunderstorm "possibly producing a tornado" was heading southeast toward Suffield and Ralston.

Calcary had been under a severe thunderstorm watch since 10:18 a.m., with forecasters warning of potential high wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain. The agency noted a "slight chance" of a tornado in the city.

Video posted on social media showed high winds and reduced visibility on the Trans-Canada Highway near Strathmore, and quarter-sized hail reported toward Brooks earlier in the afternoon.

The unsettled weather is forecast to continue through the rest of the week with cooler temperatures expected.
