Truck bursts into flames and explodes in southeast Calgary, no injuries reported

A truck caught fire and exploded at 17th Avenue and 42nd Street SE in southeast Calgary on Tuesday afternoon. Fire crews were called just before noon.
When Calgary Fire Department crews arrived, the vehicle was already fully engulfed in flames. Thick smoke rose into the air as bystander video captured the truck burning intensely before the explosion. Firefighters stretched hose lines to knock down the flames as a hazmat team was dispatched to monitor runoff from firefighting efforts.
Alex Kwan, a Calgary Fire Department spokesperson, said crews found no occupants. "When we arrived, I don't believe we found a driver or anyone in the vehicle," Kwan said. Firefighters searched the vehicle after the fire was extinguished and found no one inside.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined by investigators.
This follows a truck fire in the same area on June 9, 2026, that nearly spread to nearby homes. In August, five vehicles caught fire in northeast Calgary with the arson unit investigating.
