Calgary police have charged two men in connection with extortion threats made against a northeast business owner in early May, as part of an ongoing investigation into extortions targeting the city's South Asian community.

On May 5, a northeast business received demands for money from an unknown person who threatened to shoot the owner, their friends, and their family if they did not comply. Police were contacted immediately and began investigating.

Four men were taken into custody on May 28 following a search warrant at a residence in the 0 to 100 block of Saddlestone Way NE. Two of those men were charged: Sandeep Singh, 30, and Amandeep Mallhi, 39, each face one count of extortion and possession of proceeds of crime. They appeared in court June 1.

Since the Organized Crime & Offender Management unit began its investigation in April 2025, there have been 46 extortion-related incidents with 14 individuals charged with 54 criminal offences. Nineteen of those cases involved shootings at homes, businesses, or vehicles.

"Each arrest reinforces our commitment to protecting Calgarians and sends a clear message to those involved in these crimes," said Superintendent Jeff Bell of the CPS Criminal Operations & Intelligence Division.
