Calgary Police are investigating after a woman in her 40s and a child under age 10 were found dead inside a northeast Calgary home Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responded to a welfare check at a residence in the community of Temple around 2:05 p.m. Upon entering, they discovered both bodies.

District 5 Staff Sergeant Mike Saad said the investigation is ongoing and few details are currently available, noting that multiple factors go into investigations of this nature.

Police Chief Katie McLellan described the incident as deeply troubling. "These incidents are heartbreaking and have a significant impact on the families and loved ones of the deceased, individuals, members of our community, first responders, and our entire city," she said. "Our members are here to fully investigate the circumstances around these deaths, and we appreciate the community's support and patience as we sort out the details of what has occurred here today."

McLellan noted this marks the second time in a month that officers have had to respond to a suspicious death involving a child.

Police said they do not believe there is additional risk to the public and do not believe there are any outstanding suspects. The Calgary Police Service victim assistance units are available to affected family, friends, and community members.
