A woman is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Calgary's Legacy neighbourhood early Wednesday morning.

Police were called to a home in the 200 block of Legacy Circle S.E. around 1:20 a.m. to check on the woman's welfare. At approximately 2:30 a.m., she exited the home with a weapon, and the situation escalated. One officer fired their service weapon, striking the woman. She was declared deceased at the scene.

One officer was transported to hospital for precautionary measures; another was evaluated by medics at the scene. Both are recovering.

During the incident, a gas meter ruptured, causing a leak in the community. Officers evacuated nearby homes while Calgary Fire Department secured the scene. The cause of the gas leak has not been determined. Residents were able to return to their homes shortly after.

Neighbour Nate Nickel said police had responded to the same address previously. "The police have been here — I think it was last week, might have been the week before, but she was having some kind of an issue," he said. Another neighbour, Carisa Collins, described the incident as scary and emotional, saying she had never noticed issues with the house before.

As is standard protocol for any officer-involved shooting, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Calgary Police Service. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through www.calgarycrimestoppers.org or via the P3 Tips app.
