A young deer stuck in a vertical rail fence at the Banff Administration Building was rescued June 18, after a multi-agency response that exposed gaps in emergency coordination.

Rory O'Neill, founder of Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue, received an urgent call about the trapped fawn. When Parks Canada didn't arrive after half an hour, she contacted the Banff fire department, which quickly obtained Parks Canada approval to assist. Both fire and Parks crews arrived minutes later and coordinated the rescue.

Using a jaws-of-life tool, crews pried apart the metal fence bars as one person worked to calm the deer. The fawn was freed in under a minute and ran off.

O'Neill praised the crews' efficiency once on scene but expressed frustration over the initial delay. "Parks Canada didn't call the fire department, I called the fire department," she said. "The fire department arrived pretty much minutes after I called. Parks Canada took over half an hour." Given the distress the deer was in and the risk of serious injury from thrashing, she said she would have hoped Parks Canada dispatched fire support immediately.

Parks Canada confirmed its Wildlife team, Banff fire crews, and RCMP responded to the call. In a statement, the agency said: "Parks Canada would like to acknowledge the quick and coordinated response which helped resolve the situation efficiently while minimizing additional stress to the animal."

Parks Canada asked residents to report wildlife incidents to Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470.
