Things to do in Calgary this week: August 9–15

This is a week shaped entirely by weather. Rain dominates from Sunday through Thursday—Monday and Tuesday hit near 90 percent chance, with Wednesday bottoming out at a chilly 10°C—so plan your week indoors first, outdoors last. The good news: Friday clears to overcast and Saturday climbs to 22°C with just light drizzle, meaning the weekend is yours to reclaim.

Start Tuesday if you want loud guitars. The Pretty Reckless, the American hard-rock band fronted by Taylor Momsen, plays two shows the same night—one at The Palace Theatre at 7 p.m. for the 18-plus crowd, the other at Grey Eagle Event Centre at 8 p.m. Both are on the same bill; pick your room. Momsen's voice cuts through the kind of alternative rock that rewards a live room, and on a wet night when staying home feels tempting, this is the kind of set that justifies leaving the house.

Comedy lands Thursday and Saturday, both at Grey Eagle. Jo Koy, who built a national following through Netflix specials and years on Chelsea Lately, takes the stage Thursday at 8 p.m.—a solid midweek break from the rain. Chelsea Handler, another late-night veteran with a sharp comedic voice, closes out Saturday at 8 p.m. as the weather finally turns. Both pull crowds and both are worth the ticket.

Friday is the week's real pivot. Daniel Caesar and 070 Shake perform at the Saddledome at 7:30 p.m., and this is the draw that matters. Caesar, the R&B and soul artist whose album Freudian established him as one of the more introspective voices in contemporary music, carries the night. 070 Shake, the alternative hip-hop artist from New Jersey, rounds out an evening that rewards the wait through a soaking week. By Friday, the rain finally lifts enough to make the walk downtown feel less punishing.

Beyond the stage, Alberta on the Plate runs through Sunday, August 16, and this is the moment to book a table. The province-wide dine festival brings 40-plus Calgary restaurants into a 10-day celebration of local producers and growers. Hit CHARCUT or Vintage Chophouse and Tavern if you want steak done right with restaurant pedigree; both lean into the local sourcing the festival champions. If you want something faster and warmer for a wet night, Gogi Korean Kitchen delivers the kind of comfort that makes rain irrelevant.

Saturday evening also brings Caamp, the Ohio folk band, to Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Folk music in a theater, when the weather is finally cooperating, feels like a relief. It is a gentler night than Friday's R&B intensity, and by Saturday the sky has actually cleared enough to justify the trek.

One more thing: the Stampeders host the BC Lions at McMahon Stadium on Thursday at 7 p.m. if you want to stay local and loud during the football season. Rain or not, the CFL finds its audience.
