The Strathcona County Museum and Archives is running an exhibit on Medieval Days, a community celebration held in Sherwood Park from 1964 to 1967. The exhibit, From Sherwood Forest to Sherwood Park: The Story of Medieval Days, is part of Spooky Strathma, the museum's annual October event that turns the building into a medieval village.
The exhibit includes archival photographs, newspaper articles, costumes, artifacts and stories from the original celebrations. Museum staff say it has prompted residents who attended decades ago to come in and share their memories.
"Many had no idea it had been such a big community event," said Kristiana Clarke, the museum's director of museum operations. She said visitors reacted with interest as they walked through the immersive setup. "One thing that stood out to me was how much the community embraced Medieval Days. It was not just something people attended. The old photos and stories show how involved the community was."
Clarke said families have joined medieval-themed activities throughout the month and that one of the exhibit's strongest outcomes has been reconnecting residents with local history.
