A new Real Canadian Superstore is coming to southwest Edmonton's Riverview community. The City of Edmonton issued a building permit on June 10 for construction at 20111 Maskêkosihk Tr. NW, with work expected to start this year.

Loblaw, the parent company of Real Canadian Superstore, did not respond to requests for details about the location. Real Canadian Superstores typically offer groceries plus significant floor space for electronics, housewares, clothing, pharmacy services, and other household essentials.

The announcement comes during a volatile year for Edmonton's independent grocery sector. In late May, Sunterra Market closed its downtown Commerce Place location after 32 years. Specialty grocer Tesoro is closing its Windermere location after less than two years. Earlier this year, L'OCA Quality Market shut down its Edmonton and Sherwood Park stores.

Meanwhile, several major chains are expanding. Alongside the new Riverview Superstore, Loblaw-owned No Frills and Costco are also opening new locations in the city.
