Man sentenced to six years in fatal 2024 Whyte Avenue stabbing

Nathan Nanemahoo has been sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter in the June 26, 2024 stabbing death of 37-year-old Krishnil Mani on Whyte Avenue. With credit for time already served, Nanemahoo has just under three years left to serve.

Nanemahoo, 36, pleaded guilty in March to manslaughter after being originally charged with second-degree murder. According to an agreed statement of facts, Nanemahoo called police around 5:13 a.m. on June 26, 2024, reporting he had stabbed a man who entered his third-floor apartment through the patio door after climbing onto the balcony. Nanemahoo told officers the stabbing occurred about 15 minutes before his call and claimed Mani had threatened him with a knife.

When police arrived, they found Mani lying on his side in the living room in a pool of blood with a small paring knife nearby. An autopsy found Mani died from 38 stab wounds to the neck, head and upper back, including injuries to the carotid artery, larynx, lung and spinal cord. There were no defensive wounds. Toxicology testing showed Mani had consumed fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Investigators recovered two bloodstained knives from the apartment and obtained a partial palm print from the exterior glass of the sliding patio door. The print was later matched to a man who was an inmate at the Edmonton Remand Centre in April 2025. That man told investigators Mani had asked him to climb onto the balcony and enter the apartment to unlock the front door so Mani could retrieve his bike, in exchange for drugs. CCTV footage corroborated the account.

During police interviews, Nanemahoo said Mani had been staying intermittently at the apartment for one to two months after initially being invited as a guest. Nanemahoo told investigators that Mani had repeatedly threatened him, assaulted him at least once, and refused to leave. Mani had previously been convicted of manslaughter and served a 12-year prison sentence.

On the day of the killing, Nanemahoo woke to find Mani inside the apartment and refusing to leave. Although Mani eventually agreed to go, Nanemahoo told investigators he believed Mani would return and kill him. Nanemahoo admitted he stabbed Mani while Mani was not looking but maintained he acted in self-defence. Court heard Nanemahoo had called 911 twice two days before the killing, asking officers to remove Mani from the apartment, but Mani had left before police arrived.
