184th Street bridge closes for three months for major rehabilitation work

The 184th Street bridge over Yellowhead Trail closes Monday for three months of intensive rehabilitation — its first major work since it opened in the early 2000s. The closure allows crews to renew the bridge deck, replace the surface asphalt, and install an upgraded waterproofing system in a single construction season.

Drivers will not be able to cross Yellowhead Trail using 184th Street, though they can still access 184th Street itself using the Yellowhead ramps. Traffic needing to cross Yellowhead at 184th Street will detour to Anthony Henday Drive, 156th Street, or 170th Street.

Ward Nakota Isga Coun. Reed Clarke acknowledged the construction pain, particularly for residents in the west end already dealing with disruptions from the LRT project and earlier work on 87th Avenue, 95th Avenue, Stony Plain Road, and 156th Street. "This has been a while coming," he said. "It's no secret that the west end has been hit really hard with construction." But he emphasized the work cannot be delayed further. "Bridges are obviously pretty integral, especially ones going over major highways like this. So we need to take the measures in place to make sure that they're going to be safe and they're going to last the time expected on them."

The city has not released the total cost of the rehabilitation project or provided a specific start date beyond "Monday" — as HOC reported in August, the closure began August 10.
