Large portions of Alberta face a risk of severe thunderstorms on Wednesday, July 8, with the potential for tornadoes and baseball-sized hail, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
A high-risk zone spans much of eastern Alberta, including Lloydminster, Wainwright, Provost, Consort, and Oyen. In that area, conditions could bring wind gusts up to 120 kilometres an hour, hail up to 6 centimetres in size, and up to 50 millimetres of rain. A tornado cannot be ruled out.
A moderate weather risk covers large population centres including Calgary, Edmonton, Airdrie, Red Deer, Chestermere, Medicine Hat, and Lethbridge. Residents there should expect wind gusts up to 110 kilometres an hour, hail up to 6 centimetres, and around 50 millimetres of rain.
Other areas of the province—including Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Hinton, Edson, High Level, and Peace River—face a lower-level risk with wind gusts up to 70 kilometres an hour, hail up to 1 centimetre, and up to 30 millimetres of rain.
