Severe thunderstorms threaten Alberta foothills and east
Environment Canada warns of hail up to 3 cm and wind gusts to 90 km/h across two regions; Edmonton area expected to escape today's storms.
Severe thunderstorms could hammer parts of Alberta Thursday, with two moderate-risk zones flagged by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The foothills face wind gusts up to 90 kilometres an hour, hail up to 2.5 centimetres, and 40 millimetres of rain. Eastern Alberta and the Lloydminster region are in the second risk zone, expecting similar wind speeds and hail up to 3 centimetres, plus up to 50 millimetres of rain.
The Edmonton region appears to be in the clear for Thursday. Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat could see storms with wind gusts up to 70 km/h and hail up to 2 centimetres.
Another round of weaker storms is possible Friday for Edmonton, Red Deer, Lloydminster, and Edson—wind to 70 km/h and hail 1 to 2 centimetres. Calgary, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, and Banff National Park face a separate threat Friday afternoon.
We're just days from June, and storm season is ramping up.
