Environment Canada issued a yellow severe thunderstorm watch for Edmonton Friday morning, calling for thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain beginning in the early afternoon.

The watch covers much of central and east Alberta, stretching from communities like St. Paul and Bonnyville in the east to Red Deer and Stettler in the south.

Thunderstorms are expected to persist into the evening. Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and reduced visibility. Large hail poses a risk of significant damage and injury. Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings, and overturn vehicles.

Environment Canada's forecast for Edmonton shows increasing cloudiness with showers beginning early afternoon and a risk of thunderstorm activity. Winds will become northwest 20 km/h, gusting to 40 near noon. The high is expected to reach 17 C. Tonight, showers will end near midnight with clearing skies and a low of 8 C.

Saturday looks brighter — sunny becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon with a high of 19 C.
