Alberta's police watchdog says no charges will be laid against Edmonton Police Service officers following an arrest in October 2025 that left a man with a brain bleed.
Around 1:30 a.m. on October 14, two EPS officers were parked outside an establishment at 106 Street and 107 Avenue NW when a man, who officers said appeared intoxicated, approached their vehicle. An officer exited and told the man he was under arrest. According to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the man appeared to pull away, and the officer took him to the ground where his head and face hit the pavement.
The man was taken to the University of Alberta hospital, where a CT scan showed a brain bleed. ASIRT said it remains unclear whether the injury resulted from that incident or an earlier incident on September 27.
The man believed he had been assaulted by the officers with what he thought was a steel bar or similar object, but couldn't provide additional details. ASIRT obtained his medical records through signed consent.
The man was discharged on October 19 after declining a recommended craniotomy and making repeated efforts to leave the hospital against medical advice. Medical records showed he had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury in November 2024 from a pedestrian motor vehicle collision.
Through video footage and statements from both officers, ASIRT determined the man did approach the police vehicle and spoke through the window, raising his voice before the physical altercation took place. The incident lasted around two minutes total.
ASIRT ruled that no charges would be laid against the officer in question.
