Edmonton police have laid second-degree murder charges in connection with a 2021 homicide, bringing closure to a case that went unsolved for five years.

Daniel John Sunday, 44, and Ashley Dawn Dion, 33, have both been charged in the death of Allan Freed, 55, who was found dead near 93 Street and 105 Avenue on Wednesday, May 12, 2021. An autopsy determined Freed died from blood loss due to stab wounds.

Police announced the charges on Friday following what they described as a "complex and lengthy investigation" by the homicide section. Both accused have been remanded into custody.

The charges mark a significant development in a case that has remained unresolved for years in Edmonton's downtown core.
