More rain is heading to Edmonton this weekend, raising the risk of overland flooding as the region remains waterlogged from last weekend's downpour.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a special weather statement calling for 30 to 60 millimetres of rain between Friday evening and Sunday. The warning comes after more than 100 millimetres fell recently, causing overland flooding and straining municipal wastewater systems.
"With the ground already saturated from the storm this past weekend and with rainfall totals for the month of June well above normal, additional rain will increase the risk of overland flooding, washouts and potential impacts to infrastructure," the statement said.
Environment Canada noted there is "low certainty" about where the heaviest rain will fall. "The area of heaviest rain is forecast to fall in a narrow band, which could lead to more localized impacts than we observed last weekend," the agency said.
Another system is forecast Sunday night into next week that may bring additional heavy rainfall to vulnerable areas of central Alberta. Residents should monitor conditions closely and prepare for potential disruptions.
