Edmonton and central Alberta are under an orange-level rainfall warning as heavy rain moves in over the weekend.
Environment Canada expects 40 to 70 millimetres of rain, beginning with scattered showers and thunderstorms Friday evening before intensifying Saturday morning and throughout the day. The ground is already saturated from last weekend's storm, and June rainfall totals are well above normal — additional rain will likely cause overland flooding, washouts, and damage to infrastructure and property.
Thunderstorms across parts of Alberta today pose a separate threat. The central Foothills and areas near Red Deer and north of Calgary face a moderate risk of wind gusts up to 90 kilometres an hour, hail up to four centimetres (golf ball-sized), and rainfall totals of 50 millimetres. Medicine Hat faces a similar moderate risk with slightly smaller hail. Edmonton, Calgary, Lloydminster, Peace River, and High Level may see thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 70 kilometres an hour, hail to two centimetres, and 50 millimetres of rain.
