Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an orange rainfall warning for Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Wetaskiwin, Leduc, and Devon, with heavy rain expected to continue through Monday, June 29.
The warning indicates a high impact level with high forecast confidence. Total rainfall amounts are expected to reach 70 to 90 mm following the widespread rain that occurred Saturday. The warning notes that with the ground already saturated from the weekend storm and June rainfall totals well above normal, additional precipitation is likely to cause overland flooding, washouts, and impacts to infrastructure and property. Localized flooding is likely, and some roads may become impassable.
Numerous roads saw flooding and closures due to heavy rain this past weekend, particularly those east of Edmonton in Strathcona County. Rain is expected to continue into Monday before slowly diminishing Monday night, with precipitation ending by Tuesday morning.
Environment Canada cautions that water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Fast-moving and rapidly rising water can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure. The agency urges drivers not to proceed through flooded roadways and to watch for washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts. Current watches and warnings can be checked on the ECCC website.
