The Edmonton Oilers have signed reigning Stanley Cup champion goaltender Frederik Andersen to a one-year contract with a cap hit of $2.8 million, the team announced July 2.
Andersen, 36, is coming off a dominant playoff performance with the Carolina Hurricanes, posting a 13-2 record with a .910 save percentage as the Hurricanes won the Cup. His regular season was less impressive — a 16-14-5 record with a .874 save percentage — but the Oilers are banking on his postseason pedigree.
GM Stan Bowman made a flurry of moves on the first day of free agency: he cleared $9.25 million in cap space by trading Darnell Nurse to San Jose, signed defenceman Ryan Shea to a $20 million contract, acquired young goalie Devon Levi from Buffalo in a trade, and re-signed forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Max Jones. The Andersen signing capped off an active day.
The Oilers plan to use a three-goalie rotation with Andersen, Levi, and Jarry to manage workload and keep the veteran's minutes down. Injury concerns have shadowed Andersen's career, making a shared rotation strategy sensible for Edmonton.
