Frederik Andersen, the Stanley Cup-winning goaltender from the Carolina Hurricanes, has signed with the Edmonton Oilers on a one-year deal worth $1 million with the opportunity to reach $2.8 million through games-played perks and team playoff success.

Andersen brings 552 league games and 101 playoff games to a position that has been a challenge for the Oilers' recent competitive window. During his playing career against Edmonton, Andersen compiled a 19-3-3 record with a .920 save percentage — but now he will be on the same side as Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

"They've made me and others look silly in games," Andersen said on a Zoom call Monday from his home in Denmark. "And now it'll just be in practices. Cool to see them up close and see how they operate, those elite players."

Andersen played for Mike Babcock in Toronto and considers the coach a trusted mentor. Babcock's fingerprints were all over the July 1 signing, having worked with Andersen after acquiring him from Anaheim in 2016. "My experience with Mike was good," Andersen said. "As a goalie you don't always deal with the head coach much, he leaves you alone with the goalie coach. But he was a great x's and o's guy."

Andersen was the second Hurricanes player to receive the Stanley Cup after Carolina's victory over Vegas last month. "Edmonton's been knocking on the door for awhile now," he said. "The Oilers have been close and obviously it would be great if they got over the hump. They're very serious about it."
