The Edmonton Oilers have signed Frederik Andersen to a one-year contract worth $2.8 million, adding veteran depth in goal after the Darnell Nurse trade freed up cap space.
Andersen, 31, spent last season with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he started their Stanley Cup run. He went 13-2 with a 1.89 goals-against average and three shutouts before giving way to Brandon Bussi in the final four games. Over his 13-year NHL career, Andersen has posted a record of 324-149-58 with a 2.59 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. He's six-foot-four, 229 pounds, and brings the size and experience Edmonton's crease has lacked.
The signing leaves the Oilers with three goalies: Andersen, Tristan Jarry (acquired mid-season last year and struggling early), and prospect Devon Levi. Money-wise, the three will cost Edmonton just under $9 million combined—Jarry at $5.3 million, Andersen at $2.8 million, and Levi at $812,000.
Andersen played for new Oilers head coach Mike Babcock in Toronto, where he was a starter before moving to Carolina. The depth could help stabilize what has been Edmonton's persistent weak spot, though Jarry's inconsistency and Andersen's injury history may create complications down the road.
