Remains of 12-year-old Edmonton boy identified; RCMP launch homicide investigation

Human remains found near Calling Lake, 211 km north of Edmonton, have been identified as Fiasal Hussein. Police are asking for public help.

Human remains discovered near the hamlet of Calling Lake, roughly 211 km north of Edmonton, have been identified as 12-year-old Fiasal Hussein of Edmonton. An autopsy determined the manner of death was homicide, RCMP said Sunday.

Officers from the Athabasca RCMP detachment responded to the call at 3:26 a.m. on Thursday, August 6. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton completed an autopsy on Friday and confirmed Hussein's identity and ruled the death a homicide. The RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.

Corporal Gina Slaney told media that Hussein had not been reported missing to police before Thursday, and his family has been notified of his death.

Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area between midnight and 4:30 a.m. on August 6 to contact them. The focus areas are Highway 813 near Calling Lake and Range Road 213A, known locally as the C-Road. Police are specifically seeking dash cam video from that timeframe.
