Rylex Machine & Supply Ltd. has pleaded guilty to failing to provide safeguards for equipment and been fined $217,000 in connection with a worker's death at its east Edmonton shop on March 4, 2024.
The worker became entangled in a manual lathe's moving parts. The company initially faced 12 charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Thirteen other charges were withdrawn by the Crown.
Rylex pleaded guilty Sept. 14 in Edmonton Court of Justice to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety Code. Of the $217,000 penalty, $216,000 will be paid to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology to purchase a dual-spindle lathe and fund education promoting strong workplace culture among future trades professionals. The remaining $1,000 is a victim fine surcharge.
The company has been placed on two years of enhanced regulatory supervision. Both the company and Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalty.
