Sprinter Sadé McCreath sets new Canadian women's 100-metre record at Edmonton meet

Sadé McCreath sprinted into the record books Sunday at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational. The 30-year-old clocked 10.86 seconds in a semifinal heat, eclipsing Audrey Leduc's previous Canadian women's 100-metre record of 10.94 from last year's Edmonton meet.

McCreath's time is the fastest 100-metre run on Canadian soil and ranks eighth fastest globally this year — just 23-hundredths of a second behind world leader Adaejah Hodge of the British Virgin Islands. The performance qualifies her for the World Athletics Championships entry standard, though the qualifying window doesn't open until August 23.

Leduc, of Gatineau, Quebec, won Sunday's final with a wind-aided 10.90, five-hundredths faster than McCreath, who placed fifth in Edmonton's 100m a year ago with a time of 11.28. The two also faced off at the Canadian track and field championships last month in Ottawa, where Leduc again came out on top.

McCreath, who finished fourth at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland just days before the Edmonton meet, has had a strong 2026. She made her Diamond League debut in Stockholm on June 7 and won at the Pan American Athletics Championships in Medellín, Colombia two weeks ago. In May, she helped Canada's women's 4x100 relay team set a Canadian outdoor record of 42.17 seconds at World Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.
